Estemeed sister and brother Michelle and Barack: 

Peace and well-being for you. We greet you with great affection.

We are a group of cuban protestant women, lay leaders, pastors, and theologians that are addressing you in your capacity as the family presiding over the government of the United States of America.

We believe you have been elected in a transparent electoral process, with the endorsement of the vast majority of your people, and we are glad that is the case. It is a great responsibility for both of you, as it is undoubtedly, feeling that "God has chosen you for this time" as Mordecai would say when defending the Jewish people, before Queen Esther (Esther 4: 14 b). We have asked God to bless you in your responsibility to lead the destiny of your Nation along the best ways as well as your relations with the rest of the world.

On the occasion of such a meaningful celebration of the Thanksgiving Day, in which two cultures met in an historical effort to achieve reconciliation and unity, we are addressing you to request that the case of the Cuban five men in prison since 1998 in the USA charged with espionage be reviewed: Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino, René González, Fernando González and Gerardo Hernández, who have already been in prison for eleven long years.

 They were sentenced in 2001. A long process of appeals has taken place during the last  years.  The Defence has emphasised the partiality of the site, the extreme sentences, and particularly the fact that the US national security was never endangered (affirmed by high representatives of the US Army). However, only three of them have managed to be re-sentenced in Miami.

 We are begging you that the process of appealing be studied, the hundreds of documents compiled by the Defence, the decision of the three-judge panel of the Court of Appeals of 2005 and the frequent violations of human rights that are found in this process, acknowledged by international institutions, parliaments, and the public opinion of many countries.

 Obama, you are a man who is taking firm steps towards the way of justice, as a worthy and unquestionable heir of Martin Luther King's way of thinking and we thank God for that. The Nobel Peace Prize you have received is rather than an honour, a challenge to be consistent with the principles of justice of that award and with the long list of names supporting it.

 Michelle, we admire your life itinerary and we hope that as a wife and mother, you may be able to place yourself in Adriana's shoes, her impossibility to have a child, out of this reason.

 On this Thanksgiving Day, one word from you, one of your signatures, could change the uncertain destiny of these young men, allowing them to return to their homes, back to their families, to enjoy the same well-being and joy that you experience together with your two daughters.

May God, who is life and Shalom, light your ways and encourage with his Spirit of justice and truth the work that you have in your hands.

CARTA A LA FAMILIA OBAMA DE MUJERES CRISTIANAS CUBANAS

Estimados hermanos Michelle y Barack:

Paz y bien para ustedes. Les saludamos  con gran afecto.

Somos un grupo de mujeres evangélicas cubanas, líderes laicas, pastoras y teólogas que nos dirigimos a ustedes como familia que preside el gobierno de los Estados Unidos de América.

Creemos que ha sido elegido en un proceso electoral transparente, con el respaldo de una amplia mayoría de su pueblo, y nos alegramos de ello. Esa es una gran responsabilidad para ambos como sin duda lo es también sentir que "Dios le ha elegido para esta hora" como dijera Mardoqueo al defender a los judíos, ante la  Reina Esther (Esther 4: 14 b). Hemos pedido a Dios que les bendiga en vuestra responsabilidad para conducir por los mejores caminos, el destino de su Nación y las relaciones con el resto del mundo.

En la fecha tan significativa de la celebración  del "Día de Acción de Gracias", donde se encontraron  dos culturas en un histórico esfuerzo para el logro de la reconciliación y la unidad, nos dirigimos a ustedes para solicitarles que  se revise el caso de los cinco cubanos presos desde 1998 en EUA acusados de espionaje: Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino, René González, Fernando González y Gerardo Hernández , que ya han permanecido en prisión por  once largos años.

Fueron sentenciados en 2001. Un largo proceso de apelaciones ha transcurrido en estos años.  La defensa ha  hecho énfasis en la parcialidad de la sede, las extremas condenas, y sobretodo que jamás estuvo en peligro la seguridad norteamericana (afirmado por altos representantes del Ejército norteamericano). Sin embargo, solo se ha logrado que  tres de ellos hayan regresado a re-sentencia en Miami.

Les estamos rogando que  se  estudie el proceso de apelaciones, los cientos de documentos reunidos por la Defensa, la decisión del panel de tres jueces de la Corte de apelaciones de 2005  y las frecuentes violaciones de derechos humanos que atraviesan en este proceso, reconocidas por  instituciones internacionales, parlamentos  y la opinión pública  de numerosos países.

Obama, usted es un hombre que está dando pasos seguros hacia el camino de la justicia, como digno e indiscutible heredero del pensamiento de Martin Luther King, Jr.; damos gracias a Dios por ello. El Premio Nóbel de la Paz que ha recibido, es más que un homenaje, es un reto a no ser inconsecuente con los principios de justicia de ese premio y con la larga lista de nombres que lo suscriben.

Michelle, admiramos su trayectoria de vida y esperamos que como esposa y madre pueda colocarse en el lugar de estas mujeres que sufren la ausencia de sus seres queridos y en el caso de Adriana, la imposibilidad de procrear, por este motivo.

En este Día de Acción de Gracias, una palabra suya, una firma suya, podría cambiar el  destino inseguro de estos jóvenes, permitiéndoles regresar a sus hogares, con sus familias, para disfrutar del mismo bienestar  y regocijo que ustedes experimentan junto a sus dos hijas.

Que el Dios, que es vida y Shalom, ilumine sus caminos y anime con su Espíritu de justicia y verdad la obra que tienen en sus manos.
