                 Cuba saved Ronald Reagan's Life

Without a doubt, Cuban Intelligence saved President Ronald Reagan's life in 1984, when the Cubans warned the U.S. Secret Services of preparations to assassinate the President by extremists from North Carolina, three years after Reagan had suffered a gun shot wound.

In one of his reflections some years ago, Fidel Castro shared how a Cuban United Nations diplomat informed the then Chief of Security of the U.S. mission that a North Carolina right-wing extremist group was planning to assassinate Ronald Reagan during a trip to that state.

"Highly confidential information passed to an official responsible for the security of the Cuban delegates to the UN in the Summer of 1984 warned of a plan to attack President Ronald Reagan, by an extreme right group in North Carolina. As soon as we learned of it, we decided to immediately inform the Northamerican authorities. Our official suggested passing that information to Robert C. Mueller, Chief of Security of the United States Mission to the United Nations, with whom we had contact regarding the protection of the Cuban delegations that visited the international organ."

"The attack would occur very soon, when Reagan visited North Carolina as part of his re-election campaign."

"The information was complete; it gave the names of those implicated in the plan; the date, time, and location where the assassination of the President would occur; the type of weapons possessed by the terrorists and where those arms were kept; in addition, the place where those involved in the attempt had gathered and a brief report of what had been discussed in that gathering."

"The passing of the information was accomplished in a meeting with Mr. Mueller in a building located on 37th Street and Third Avenue, two blocks from the Cuban mission building."

"All known details were passed on, making certain that the most important facts were clear, such as the names of all the people involved, the place, hour and type of armaments these people would use."

"At the end of the exchange, our officer related to Mr. Mueller that we had received instructions from the Cuban government to make this exchange with urgency; and that we had selected Mr. Mueller because we knew he was a professional on security issues."

"Mueller read everything to ensure that nothing had been altered and that he had noted all the important elements."

"He asked about the source, and we told him it was confidential. He said the Secret Service would need to talk with the Cuban officers.  We replied there would be no problem in doing that."

"Around four thirty that afternoon, agents of the Secret Service gathered with the Cuban representation."

"That interview took place in the apartment 34-F, located on the 34th floor of a complex of buildings named Ruppert Towers, that is on 92nd Street, between Third and Second Avenues, in upper Manhattan."

"The agents were two white young men, short hair, well dressed.  Their main objective was to check what Mueller had written, because they had in hand a copy of the cable he had sent them.  When the contents of the cable were checked, they were assured that nothing was missing."

"The agents of the Secret Service wanted to know who had provided the information and how that information had come to us.  They were answered in the same way as Muller. They were also interested in knowing if further information would be possible, and were told that if anything new arrived, they would immediately receive it as well."

"They gave their cards and asked to be called directly if additional information were discovered, suggesting that it would not be necessary to go through Mueller."

"The following Monday we learned that the Federal Bureau of Investigations had detained a group of people in North Carolina under several charges, none of which --as was expected-- related to an attempt against President Reagan, who shortly thereafter traveled to that State as part of his presidential re-election campaign."

"Four or five days after the detentions, at the end of the same week, Mr. Mueller phoned our Mission to invite the Cuban officer for lunch, which occurred in the restaurant for United Nations Delegates .  The first thing Mueller did was to request that the government of Cuba be informed of the United States government's gratitude for the information, and to confirm that they had acted against the group involved.  A Cuban anti-terrorist fighter saved the life of a President of the United States!"

That is how Fidel Castro related how Cuba had saved Ronald Reagan's life, in one of his reflections.

On May 20, 2015, through Radio Miami, we communicated with the person who carried out the task of informing the Northamerican authorities about the attack being prepared against President Reagan.  That person is Nestor Garcia Iturbe, who was a Cuban diplomat in New York City.  Garcia Iturbe remembers that a Saturday afternoon he received a call from from his superiors in Cuba, asking him to locate the most trustworthy person, in order to pass to him very sensitive information.  Just as Fidel Castro explained, Garcia Iturbe provided the details of his exchange with Robert C. Mueller, Chief of Security of the United States Mission to the United Nations.  The reader can find the testimony at, www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqfqYZgLfKI, under the title, "Cuba, le salvo la vida a Ronald Reagan", ("Cuba, saved Ronald Reagan's life").

Garcia Iturbe was born in Havana on February 26, 1940. He has a degree in Political Science from the University of Havana.  He is a Professor and expert on the United States, and a Member of the Scientific Council of the Superior Institute of International Relations, the Cuban Peace Movement, and the Cuban Association of the United Nations.  He has published several books about the United States.  He writes for the Cuban and international press and magazines and lectures at several Universities and Centers of Higher Education of Cuba, the United States and other counties.
