¿Buenos Aires, 20 de Agosto de 1998. República Argentina o lo poco que nos van dejando de ella.

 

Mi muy querido Mial:  esta es una carta apresurada, la iba a hacer Irene y debió salir corriendo a buscar una bolsa de correspondencia que alguna argentina trajo de La Habana.  Perdoná el nerviosismo y la falta de extensión.  Ojalá que todos ustedes estén tan bien en la familia como nos hallamos nosotros, hablo de salud por supuesto. Ni por asomo se me ocurriría desearles lo mismo en lo social pues aquí todo va para peor y aceleradamente.  Inclusive ahora tenemos el Sanbenito de que la Aduana Argentina nos prohibe nuevamente los envíos.  Irene está gestionando una entrevista con el administrador. Ya van cinco meses que los muy hijos de puta nos tienen demorados los seis mil kilos de solidaridad que irán a Isla de la Juventud. 

 

Espero que el Miguel Strogoff de ocasión, (me refiero respetuosa pero históricamente al argentino al que no conozco pero que viaja) cumpla entregándote esta misiva a la que agrego una invitación que te hace la revista America Libre (Frei Beto) para un seminario en Córdoba.    (Demián mi hijo me comenta que sería bueno que vengas para el segundo corte de pelo, mejoró mucho.)    Te adjunto también fotocopia de un telegrama que te llamará la atención. Es de la gente de la CBS sobre la filmación del cuerpo de Ernesto Che Guevara realizado por dos argentinos – Chouciño y Gutierrez – en Valle Grande.  Gutierrez se apareció por mi negocio y me facilitó 20 fotos de aquella época y lugar, además del telegrama en el que les agradecen sus tarea.

 

Se ha enriquecido de ésta forma el patrimonio de tu museo en Argentina hermano, pronto les haré llegar copias de las fotos e información para el de Santa Clara y para Aleida y su entidad.Además como soy anticuario te envío primera plana del diario argentino, La Razón 6ª.     Del l0 de Enero de 1961 , día en que los sagaces periodistas argentinos planearon una primera plana comunicando mi cumpleaños 18º, pero debieron resignar el notición porque a unos ilusos caribeños se les ocurría mantener su independencia y agitaban el mapa político. 

 

También te voy a regalar un trozo de mundo, no me refiero a hectáreas sino también a una página interesante publicada en el finado diario argentino El Mundo del Jueves 19 de Octubre de 1967.    Te envío un diario barrial, son los únicos que se atreven a publicarnos en su agenda cultural y hasta nos hacen notas de una página.    En cambio los diarios izquierdistas , a dos años de la fundación del Museo del Che, brillan por su ausencia.

 

Cosa rara esta Argentina.  Estamos muy activos, con proyecciones, paneles de debate, hemos celebrado el 26 de Julio con una actividad dominical corrida de 10 a.m. a l0 p.m.  con puestos callejeros tipo feria de Mataderos, ballet de la ciudad con trajes típicos, carnavalitos, zambas, canto mapuche y SALSA, sin olvidar el Hasta Siempre coreado por todos.  Hemos entregado la llave simbólica del Museo a Osvaldo Bayer, participamos en una exposición municipal durante dos horas con microfono y trescientas cincuenta personas pusieron mensajes para los cubanos en los cuadernos donados, a cada uno que lo hizo se le otorgó un reconocimiento por su solidaridad.

 

Fue en el Centro Municipal de Exposiciones. Fue hermoso y lo repetimos el sábado siguiente durante siete horas en las que miles y miles de personas nos vieron con el cartelón del museo y el manequí escultura del Che, la gente se fotografiaba y filmaba junto a la escultura.

 

Alberto, te agradezco muchísimo las fuerzas que le transmitiste a Biby Clusellas, la del Museo de La Falda, ella me lo comentó, ella se conectó con el de Alta Gracia donde ya tienen la casa de la infancia de Ernesto como Museo. Este hombre nos envió copia del acta de expropiación y nosotros le hemos enviado y le enviaremos valioso e inédito material como el que apareció hasta hoy. Ahora te pido que le escribas al Centro de Estudios Políticos Ernesto Che Guevara de Madrid ESPAÑA.

Eso si ojo no pongas tu nº de cuenta del Banco de Cuba porque te dejarán sin un cobre,  estos gallegos colonialistas.  Ah , hablando de gallegos te mando copia de unas páginas de la centenaria revista Blanco y Negro (madrileña) del año 1897 cuando Antonio Maceo andaba vivo por Pinar jodiendo a los gaitas. Creo que será muy interesante para los docentes y demás. 

 

El original de las revistas lo tengo yo, es mío, pero ya sabés que las difundiré hasta el hartazgo por todo el mundo. Los de Madrid se quedarán boquiabiertos, patitiesos y rascandose la coronilla de perplejidad. Bueno, pibe, esperando al argentino que quedó en venir y no aparece la carta se hizo normal, o sea larga, como te merecés, Ah, ya sabía, casi se me olvida, hace unos meses, este escritor Froilán González el que no corre carreras porque Adys su mujer no lo debe dejar, me escribió, comentaba que Julio M. Llanes Lopez un escritor cubano, debía hacer un trabajo escrito para jóvenes sobre el Che y que vendría a Argentina en breve, te pido que llames a Froilán y le digas que  Julio puede contar con nosotros en Capital Federal, queremos que conozca el Museo, que lo haga figurar en su libro y le daremos material documental muy importante, además de nuestra amistad.

Te regalo una anécdota que supe hace 20 horas.   Cuando la camilla con el cadáver de Che es puesta sobre el piletón del lavadero en el hospital boliviano, llegan dos argentinos Chouciño y Gutierrez, (cameraman y sonidista de la CBS) y pasan SOLOS CON EL CHE tres horas hasta que llegan las altas jerarquías militares y comienzan  a desfilar los curiosos del pueblo. 

 

Estoy por reportear a Gutierrez que tiene 84 años, Chouciño ya murió hace dos años. Ya te contaré hermano. Mi querido y entrañable amigo argentino  (en Cuba)  Alberto:   con la satisfacción de poder cartearme con vos (a pesar de lo dilatado entre carta y carta) deseo fervientemente que la salud, la felicidad y los logros profesionales sean tus permanentes compañeros.   No recibí respuesta a la carta que le contesté a tu nieto, me llama mucho la atención, seguramente se extravió o tal vez no cubrí adecuadamente las expectativas del nieto de cordobés. 

 

No te olvides Alberto de comentar y insistir con tus amigos de Venezuela y otros países que no sean Argentina, que necesitamos generar una red solidaria firme, constante, que utilizando el medio epistolar permita unificar criterios, pensamientos, actividades y decisiones que apunten a una condena masiva y sin apelaciones al bloqueo genocida y a la ley Helms-Burton. No tenemos prensa favorable, no tenemos canales de T.V., ni radios que pesen en la opinión pública, nos queda pues a nosotros elegir entre seguir en la neblina (como turco...) o recurrir a medios alternativos para propagar nuestras ideas y necesidades. 

 

Dentro de días apenas, enviaremos 46.780 lápices que reunimos en dos meses para este ciclo escolar que ha comenzado en Cuba.  También simultaneamente inauguramos un primer envío a Isla de la Juventud, no sabés lo feliz que nos hace esto. 

 

Hemos recibido hoy un alud de agradecidos recibos de ICAP provinciales, Ciego de Avila, Las Tunas, Cienfuegos, etc. etc. nos colman de satisfacción al enviarnos cartas de los propios directores de los institutos provinciales a donde llegaron los donativos.  Alberto, estamos enviando practicamente lo mismo que el año pasado, o sea que debo confesarte que nos hemos estancado (ojalá no disminuyamos en miles de kilos ni en frecuencia), por supuesto que hay motivos más que suficientes.

 

Y vos los conocerás, Argentina se derrumba día a día, conducida por ladrones rotulados de "políticos" No tenemos futuro está claro, ni presente tenemos.  Presente digno por supuesto, ¿que otro pretenderíamos después de conocer a Cuba?          Ché, Granado dale un besote a tu Delia te parte de Irene y mía, también a los chicos y a los nietos.

 

 ¿ Le escribiste a Eduardo Santa (el que les dedicó el libro a Ernesto y a vos?).  Dale che, que el Chaubloqueo puede crecer en Colombia, si nos ayudás.  Bueno de salud andamos más o menos, Irene con una bronquitis derivada en una suerte de asma, bromea diciendo que es para parecerse más a Ché. 

 

Los chicos bien y yo cada día más insatisfecho con lo poco que hacemos y lo mucho que se podría hacer si los argentinos no fueramos tan pelotudos, mezquinos, celosos y poco maduros.  Alberto, te quiero, cuidate y recordale a los cubanos (porque vos ya lo tenés bien en claro me imagino) que aquí en Argentina hay gente que lucha sin cuartel para que el bloqueo sea solo un mal recuerdo.

Digging was suspended April 8 as a precaution at the site in the pricey Spring Valley neighborhood near American University after workers pulled smoking glassware from the pit, project manager Dan Noble said Thursday. Preliminary tests show the glassware was contaminated with the toxic chemical arsenic trichloride. Officials will review safety procedures before digging continues. Workers also discovered a jar about three-quarters full of a dark liquid that turned out to be the chemical agent mustard. It was used during World War I as a weapon that caused blisters, breathing problems and vomiting. "It's a much larger disposal area than we predicted," Noble said. "The nature of debris is so different, perhaps it's a different disposal area." It's too soon to know for sure, Noble said. During World War I, the Army used the university as an experiment station to develop and test chemical weapons. Previously, there were three known sites where weapons and chemicals were buried. Glassware, chemicals, contaminated soil and munitions have been found since January in the front yard of a home next door to the university president's house, the Army Corps has revealed. About 30 intact items were sent to an Army lab in Edgewood, Md., for testing, Noble said. American University spokeswoman Camille Lepre said there were no plans to move or cancel any campus events scheduled at the president's house. About 350 pounds of glassware and debris had been removed from the site, along with about 676 barrels of soil, according to a campus memo Wednesday by university president Neil Kerwin. This is the first discovery of the smoking chemical arsenic trichloride in the cleanup project. It can be used to develop the blistering agent lewisite, Noble said. An Army Corps spokeswoman said the chemical was contained and was not exposed to the outside air. Several munitions also were discovered in recent months, including a 75 mm shell that was half full with a tear gas agent, Noble said. A few munitions also have been uncovered in the yards of homes that fall within a firing range near the campus, he said. The Army Corps is preparing to destroy some munitions at a secured facility nearby as soon as Friday. Last year, the Army Corps believed it had cleared the disposal area known as "Pit 3" but continued to dig test pits. The latest discoveries came as a surprise to residents who worry the Army Corps is trying to end its cleanup before all munitions are uncovered. "I'm concerned there's a rush to make the decision to get out," said Nan Wells, a neighborhood commissioner who represents area residents. "Things have been downplayed. That doesn't mean that I don't think the Army can handle this successfully." This is the fourth major dig for munitions and toxic agents over the past 16 years since the burial pits were discovered in the neighborhood of multimillion-dollar homes. The current excavation began in 2007 at the house, which is owned by the federal government and located next to the South Korean ambassador's residence. Hypocrisy of a Killer Dow Chemical Agent Orange U.S. Military research Vienam War

Dear Friends,    Read about the audacity and arrogance from one of the largest manufacturers of Agent Orange as well as Napalm:

 The Hypocrisy of a Killer 

Hypocrisy is defined as "the act of persistently professing beliefs, opinions, virtues, feelings, qualities, or standards that are inconsistent with one's actions.  Hypocrisy is thus a lie". 

On April 18, 2010, The Dow Live Earth Run for Water will take place.  This is a series of 6km runs and walks that are to simultaneously take place over the course of 24 hours in 150 countries and according to its primary sponsor and namesake, Dow, "these activities will ignite a massive global movement to help solve the water crisis".  

Dow Chemical was one of several and the second largest producer of Agent Orange before and during the Vietnam War.  According to a statement on their own website, "U.S. military research developed Agent Orange, and the product was formulated based on exacting military specifications."  They further go on to state, "Today, the scientific consensus is that when the collective human evidence is reviewed, it doesn't show that Agent Orange caused veteran's illnesses."  This lie and the placement of guilt remain today.  The "concern" of this, one of the largest corporations in the world today, is in its own corporate earnings – they could care less about the victims of Agent Orange.  They have done zero research to substantiate this outlandish claim.  The last time this statement was update was on June 21, 2007 – almost 3 years ago.

What is an interesting and very disturbing observation from Dow's so-called Sustainability statement I reference is that there are 10 languages this statement is available in – none of which is Vietnamese.  It was Vietnam, whose country was sprayed with Agent Orange and the other so called rainbow herbicides which exposed 4.8 million Vietnamese people, resulting in 400,000 deaths and disabilities PLUS over 500,000 children born with birth defects.  During the Vietnam War, between 1962 and 1971, the United States military sprayed over 77,000,000 litres (20,000,000 gallons) of chemical defoliants in South Vietnam – 20 percent of South Vietnam's jungles were sprayed over a 9 year period. 12% of the country.

 

In 1963, the United States (suspecting the negative effects) initiated a study on the health effects of Agent Orange that by 1967 confirmed that the chemical caused cancer, birth defects and other serious health problems.  The outcome of the study had no affect whatsoever on the use of Agent Orange.  The spraying continued, and the chemical companies, namely Dow and Monsanto, reaped millions upon millions of dollars in profits knowing that this chemical that they produced was killing, maiming and genetically altering human lives, for generations upon generations yet to come.  In fact, Agent Orange was widely used by the US Military from the late 1940's through the 1970's in our own United States, Korea, Canada, Australia, and Brazil and throughout Southeast Asia.  The American veteran and our offspring continue to die, have children who are adversely affected, and now, 3 generations after the war, continue to experience grossly negative effects from this poison.  Yes, several lawsuits were filed against the companies responsible and yes a $180 million settlement was reached in 1984 – with most affected veterans receiving a one-time lump sum payment of $1,200.  A slap in the face, a pittance – barely enough money to cover the travel back and forth to the DVA to file claims, receive medical attention, maintain some semblance to life.  What is the value of a human life?  $1,200?  The Vietnamese have received nothing.  On March 10, 2005,  Judge Jack B. Weinstein of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York dismissed the lawsuit filed by the Vietnamese victims of Agent Orange against the chemical companies which produced the defoliants and herbicides.

 

The case was appealed and heard by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals on June 18, 2007. The Court of Appeals upheld the dismissal of the case stating that the herbicides used during the war were not intended to be used to poison humans and therefore did not violate international law.

 

On March 10, 2005, Judge Jack B. Weinstein - dismissed the suit which was filed on behalf of the Vietnamese victims, ruling that there was no legal basis for the plaintiffs' claims. The judge concluded that Agent Orange was not considered a poison under international law at the time of its use by the U.S.; that the U.S. was not prohibited from using it as an herbicide; and that the companies which produced the substance were not liable for the method of its use by the government. The U.S. government is not a party in the lawsuit, claiming sovereign immunity.

 

Sovereign immunity?  Murderers – of our own US Veteran, victims of the other countries mentioned, and of course, the Vietnamese.

 

Dow and Monsanto are indeed 2 of, if not the worst of the world's most irresponsible companies.  Dow Chemical (along with Monsanto) will never escape the shadow of Agent Orange, the chemical used by the U.S. military during the Vietnam War during the 'Herbicidal Warfare' program, which lead to 400,000 deaths and disabilities and 500,000 children born with birth defects. But even with this evil legacy – and that of Napalm, which it also produced – Dow is not contrite. This corporation continues to pollute the earth without apology.

Two rivers downstream of Dow's plant in Midland, Michigan are polluted with chlorinated furans and dioxins from the company's past operations. Despite the fact that these chemicals are linked to cancer and other health issues, Dow maintains that the contamination is not a public health threat and has been fighting with the EPA over cleanup for years. Many people in the area aren't even aware of the extent of the dioxin contamination, and Dow has refused to put up warning signs. Just recently, Dow Chemical sponsored a fishing event in a waterway it polluted with dioxin, never even acknowledging the contamination and its possible effects.

Furthermore, following the purchase of Union Carbide – the company responsible for the Bhopal gas disaster which left nearly 20,000 people dead and hundreds of thousands disabled – Dow has refused to take responsibility for the health and environmental effects of the incident.

In Dow's own words "Bhopal was a terrible tragedy that none of us will ever forget. However, it is important to note that Dow never owned or operated the plant, which today is under the control of the Madhya Pradesh state government."

Fast forward to this weekend.  Run for Water?  As participants naively walk and run in this event, Dow, Monsanto and the others continue to run from their own responsibility from not only the ever present deadly pollution they created, but from the murders, birth defects and incredible agony the human race continues to have to endure – because of Dow's and Monsanto's  profit seeking.

1.  Keep indignation alive.

Periodically verify that you really are a leftist.  Adopt Norberto Bobbio's criteria: the right considers social inequality as natural as the difference between day and night. The left, to the contrary, sees social inequality as an aberration to be eradicated.  

Be careful: you may be contaminated by the virus of social-democracy, whose principal symptom is using the methods of the right to obtain conquests for the left and, in cases of conflict, of displeasing the little people so as not to upset the powerful.


2. The head thinks where the feet stand.

It is impossible to be a leftist without dirtying one's shoes in the soil where the people live, struggle, suffer, enjoy and celebrate their beliefs and victories. To engage in theory without practice is to play the game of the right.


3. Do not be ashamed of believing in socialism.

The scandal of the Inquisition does not make Christians abandon the values and ideals of the Gospels. Similarly, the failure of socialism in Eastern Europe should not lead you to erase socialism from the horizon of human history.

Capitalism, already at work for 200 years, has failed the majority of the world's population. Today we are 6 thousand million inhabitants. According to the World Bank, 2,800 million survive on less than 2 dollars per day, and 1,200 million on less than one dollar per day. That the globalization of misery is not even greater is thanks to Chinese socialism, that, in spite of its mistakes, assures food, health and education to 1,200 million people.


4. Be critical without losing self-criticism.  

Many militants from the left change sides after they start rationalizing their failures.  Excluded by power, they become bitter, and accuse their comrades of errors and hesitancies. As Jesus says, they see the straw in the other's eye, and not the plank in their own. Nor do they commit themselves to improving things. They just remain as mere spectators and judges, and, little by little, they are co-opted by the system.

Self-criticism not only consists of recognizing our own mistakes, but of accepting the criticism of comrades.


5. Know how to differentiate between a militant and a "mili-fool."  

A "mili-fool" is one who presumes to be everywhere, who participates in all the events and movements, and acts on all the fronts. His speech is full of big words and the effects of his actions are superficial.

The militant deepens his links with the people, studies, reflects, meditates; becomes well-versed in one defined area and aspect of action or activity, and values his organic links and community projects.


6. Be rigorous in the ethic of militancy.  

The left acts on principles. The right, on interests. A militant of the left can lose everything -liberty, work, life... - but not morality.  Without morality, the cause being defended and embodied is demoralized, which is an invaluable service to the right.

There are yellow types masquerading as leftist militants. They are the ones who commit themselves, keeping an eye above all on their own rise to power. In the name of a collective cause, they actually seek their own personal interest.

The true militant -such as Jesus, Gandhi, Che Guevara- is a servant, always willing to give his own life so that others may live. The true militant does not feel humiliated for not being in power, nor proud for being in power. He does not confuse himself with the function he performs.


7. Nourish yourself with the traditions of the left.  

Prayer is needed to cultivate faith, tenderness to nourish a couple's love, and "going back to the sources" to keep alive the mystique of militancy. Know the history of the left, read (auto)biographies such as "Diary of Che in Bolivia," and novels such as Gorki's "The Mother" or "The Grapes of Wrath" by Steinbeck.


8. Prefer the risk of making mistakes with the poor, to the pretension of being right without them.

To live with the poor is not easy. At first there is often a tendency to idealize them. Then it becomes evident that among the poor the same vices occur as in all other social groups. They are neither better nor worse than other human beings. The difference is that they are poor, this is, they are persons who are unjustly and involuntarily deprived of the goods essential to a dignified life. That is why we are on their side. It is a question of justice. 

A leftist militant never negotiates the rights of the poor, and knows how to learn from them.


9. Always defend the oppressed, even though they may not appear to be right.

The poor of the world endure so much the suffering that we cannot expect of them attitudes that likewise do not always appear in the lives of those who had a refined education.

In all sectors of society there are bandits and corrupt individuals. The difference is that, in the elite, corruption occurs with the protection of the law, and the bandits are defended through sophisticated economic mechanisms, that allows a speculator to carry a whole nation to ruin.

Life is the greatest gift of God.  The existence of poverty cries out to the heavens.  Never hope to be understood by those who favor the oppression of the poor.


10. Make prayer an antidote against alienation.

To pray is to let the Spirit of God question you. Many times we stop praying so as to not hear the divine call that demands our conversion, this is, a change in our way of living. We talk like militants and live like the bourgeois, comfortable, or in the easy position of judges of those who struggle.

To pray is to let God subvert our existence, teaching us to love as Jesus loved, a liberating form of love.

PARA EXIGIR EL ESCLARECIMIENTO DEL ASESINATO DE SILVIA SUPPO Y DE LA DESAPARICIÓN DE JULIO LÓPEZ

 

Las organizaciones nucleadas en el Encuentro Memoria, Verdad y Justicia marcharán el próximo martes 20 a Plaza de Mayo  para exigir el esclarecimiento de la desaparición de Jorge Julio López y del asesinato de Silvia Suppo.  La movilización partirá a las 17.30 desde Avenida de Mayo y 9 de Julio.

 

En consonancia, el Encuentro Memoria, Verdad y Justicia exigirá el desmantelamiento del aparato represivo, el juicio y la cárcel común y efectiva para  todos los genocidas.

Querido Albertico:  un abrazo para vos y toda la familia que tan orgullosa debe estar.

 

Es una satisfacción grande para quienes nos sentimos parte de ustedes el ver a tu papá honrado como merecía ser.

 

Los argentinos deberíamos intelectualizar e internalizar el concepto de orgullo por el compatriota que con su internacionalismo solidario colaboró formando médicos que hicieron de Cuba una potencia en la medicina.

 

Pero aquí es todo pobre.  La ética, la solidaridad, el internacionalismo, el desinterés, la utopía, la caballerosidad parecieran haberse perdido,  cuando tu viejo dejó nuestra patria para encontrarse con quien te parió.

 

Por esto Albertico abrazame fuerte a Delia Duque y felicitala por el flechazo con que lo capturó al petiso cordobés que nos alegra y estimula con las noticias que genera a su paso por cualquier lugar del planeta.

SANTIAGO DE CUBA. — El doctor Alberto Granado, quien en 1951 acompañó a Ernesto Guevara en su primera aventura en motocicleta por Sudamérica, recibió la categoría docente especial de Profesor de Mérito del Instituto Superior de Ciencias Médicas de la Ciudad Héroe.

 

El doctor Antonio López, rector de la facultad de Ciencias Médicas No. 1 de Santiago de Cuba entregó el Título a Alberto Granado.

Durante la ceremonia, realizada en la Plaza de la Revolución Antonio Maceo, se reconocieron los aportes de "El petiso" —como le decía el Che— a la formación de profesionales en la Facultad de Ciencias Médicas de Santiago de Cuba, donde impartía clases de Bioquímica cuando asesinaron al Guerrillero Heroico.

Granado recordó su contribución en los primeros años de la Revolución y la evaluó de sincera y desinteresada; como un aporte a la enseñanza de la Fisiología, la Farmacología y la Bioquímica.

Agradeció el título y recordó el legado del Che, que pervive en las transformaciones de la América del Sur, en la memoria colectiva del continente, en la misión de los médicos llevando vida y esperanza a los más necesitados.

Alberto integró los claustros de profesores de las escuelas de Medicina de Ciudad de La Habana y Santiago de Cuba.

En su viaje por Sudamérica el Che y Alberto conocieron la situación social en que vivían los pueblos olvidados y construyeron una amistad a prueba de fronteras y calendarios.

Con posterioridad, Granado se radicó en Venezuela. Trabajó como bioquímico y ayudó en el leprosorio de Cabo Blanco. Al triunfar la Revolución viajó a Cuba y comenzó a impartir clases en el nivel universitario.

Similar condecoración recibió el doctor José Antonio Gutiérrez Muñiz, quien además de sobresalir por su labor pedagógica, es investigador titular, miembro de la Asociación Latinoamericana de Pediatría y se desempeñó como Ministro de Salud Pública desde 1972 hasta 1979.
