RINDE LA OSPAAAL HOMENAJE PÓSTUMO A LÍDER PALESTINO
La Habana- La Organización de Solidaridad de los Pueblos de África, Asia y
América Latina (OSPAAAL) y Frente Popular de Liberación de Palestina (FPLP)
rindieron homenaje hoy a George Habbash, líder histórico y fundador de esa
agrupación, con motivo del segundo aniversario de su muerte.
Alfonso Fraga, Secretario General de la OSPAAAL, calificó a Habbash como
"uno de los combatientes más fieles y aguerridos contra la agresión sionista
e imperialista en su suelo patrio", durante una sentida ceremonia, que contó
con la presencia también de Akran Samhan, embajador de Palestina en Cuba.
Habbash, médico de profesión, murió en enero de 2008 a los 83 años de edad,
de los cuales dedicó más de 70 a la lucha del pueblo palestino por su
liberación y el derecho a contar con un Estado propio e independiente, como
lo consagra la resolución 194 de la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas.
Tres acontecimientos históricos marcaron su vida: la Revolución armada
contra el colonialismo británico y las hordas sionistas; la injusta división
de ese territorio por la resolución 181 de la ONU; y la Nakba de 1948, con
la pérdida del 78 por ciento del suelo patrio por la creación del Estado de
Israel.
Después de graduarse de medicina en 1951, Habash prestó asistencia médica en
los campamentos de refugiados palestinos en Jordania, y ese mismo año fundó
el Movimiento de Nacionales Árabes, que llegó a tener células en numerosos
países de la región, y en diciembre de 1967 el FPLP.
Fraga subrayó que a poco más de un año de la criminal agresión contra la
Franja de Gaza, Israel continúa llevando a cabo ataques "selectivos" contra
sus habitantes "para dar continuidad a sus planes genocidas, a pesar de las
hipócritas y falsas promesas de paz de la actual administración
norteamericana, su principal sostén".
Señaló que, sin embargo, el régimen israelí no ha podido ni podrá doblegar
el espíritu de resistencia palestino ni destruir las fuerzas que combaten
contra la ocupación sionista..
"Ese espíritu de resistencia está inspirado en hombres como George Habaash,
a quien rendimos homenaje hoy, conocido como El Sabio de la Revolución
Palestina, y uno de los combatientes más fieles y aguerridos contra la
intervención sionista e imperialista en su suelo patrio" enfatizó.
En la ceremonia, donde fue mostrado un video sobre la vida del destacado
luchador palestino, Fraga expresó su solidaridad con todos los presos
palestinos en cárceles de Israel y exigió su liberación inmediata y el
respeto de sus derechos fundamentales.
En el acto, que contó con la presencia de representantes de partidos y
organizaciones políticas acreditadas en Cuba, hablaron también Ernesto Gómez
Abascal, ex embajador de Cuba en varios países árabes, y Bassel Ismail,
delegado del FPLP en la isla.
Abascal, quien conoció y desarrolló estrechas relaciones personales y de
trabajo con Habash, recordó importantes pasajes de su vida y dijo que el
dirigente palestino "veía en la Revolución cubana el ejemplo a seguir: "Era
su principal guía ideológica y siempre manifestaba su compromiso, y el de su
organización, en la defensa de Cuba", afirmó.
Ismail resaltó, por su parte, que Habash "demostró su lealtad y fusión
absoluta con la causa de su pueblo y su nación, entregándolo todo por
conquistar los derechos nacionales, preservando la dignidad nacional".
OSPAAAL PAYS POSTHUMOUS TRIBUTE TO PALESTINIAN LEADER
Havana- The Organization of Solidarity of the Peoples of Africa, Asia and
Latin America (OSPAAAL) and the Popular Front for the Liberation of
Palestine paid tribute today to George Habbash, historical leader and
founder of that organization on the second anniversary of his death.
Alfonso Fraga, General Secretary of the OSPAAAL, called Habbash "one of the
most faithful and resolute fighters against the Zionist and imperialist
aggression to his native land" during a solemn ceremony also attended by
Akran Samhan, Palestinian Ambassador to Cuba.
Habbash, a medical doctor, died in January 2008 at the age of 83, having
devoted more than 70 years to the struggle of the Palestinian people for its
liberation and the right to an independent state of its own, as stipulated
in Resolution 194 of the United Nations General Assembly.
Three historical events marked his life: the armed Revolution against
British colonialism and the Zionist hordes, the unjust division of that
territory by UN Resolution 181, and the Nakba from 1948, with the loss of 78
percent of the native land due to the creation of the State of Israel.
After completing his Medicine studies in 1951, Habbash granted medical
assistance in the camps of Palestinian refugees in Jordan. That same year he
founded the Movement of Arab Nationals, which succeeded in having cells in
numerous countries of the region, and in 1967 he founded the Palestinian
Liberation Front.
Fraga underlined that a little over one year since the criminal aggression
against the Strip of Gaza, Israel continues carrying out "selective" attacks
against its inhabitants "to continue ahead with its genocidal plans, in
spite of the hypocritical and false peace promises of the present U.S.
Administration, its main support".
He pointed out that, in spite of it, the Israeli regime has not succeeded in
curbing nor will it curb the Palestinian spirit of resistance nor destroy
the forces that combat the Zionist occupation.
"That spirit of resistance is inspired in men like George Habbash, to whom
we pay tribute today, known as the Wise Man of the Palestinian Revolution
and one of the most loyal and resolute fighters against the Zionist and
imperialist intervention in his native land", he emphasized.
At the ceremony, which included the exhibition of a video film on the life
of the outstanding Palestinian fighter, Fraga expressed his solidarity with
all the Palestinians incarcerated in Israeli prisons, and demanded their
immediate liberation and respect for their essential rights.
Ernesto Gómez Abascal, former Cuban ambassador to several Arab countries,
and Bassel Ismail, the Palestinian Liberation Front's delegate in Cuba, took
the floor during the event, which was attended by representatives of
political parties and organizations accredited in the island.
Abascal, who personally met Habbash and developed close personal and work
relations with him, recalled important moments of his life and said that the
Palestinian leader "saw in the Cuban Revolution the example to be followed:
Cuba was his main ideological guide and he always expressed his commitment
and that of his organization in defense of Cuba", he said.
Ismail, in turn, underlined that Habbash "proved his loyalty and total
commitment with the cause of his people and his nation, giving everything
for the conquest of the national rights while preserving the national
dignity".
