                               Fidel
                                    Eduardo Galeano
                       Mirrors. An almost universal history

"There are men who struggle for one day and they are good. There are
others who struggle for a year and they are better. There are others                                              who struggle for many years and they are very good. But there are those
who struggle all their lives, they are indispensable".
                                                                                                                           Bertolt Brecht

His enemies say he was a king without a crown, that he confused unity with unanimity.

And in that his enemies are correct.

His enemies say that if there had been a newspaper such as «Granma» in  Napoleon's time, no-one in France would have known of the Waterloo disaster.

And in that his enemies are right.

His enemies say that he exercised power by talking a lot and not listening much, because he listened more to echoes than to voices.

And in that his enemies are correct.

But what his enemies don't say is that it was not to pose for history that he exposed his chest to the bullets when the invasion came, that he confronted hurricanes as an equal, from one hurricane to the next, that he survived six hundred thirty seven attempts on his life, that his contagious energy was decisive in turning a colony into a homeland, and that it was neither by a Mandinga spell, nor by a miracle of God, that the new motherland survived ten Presidents of the United States, all of whom had their knives, forks, and napkins at the ready, trying to consume her.

And his enemies don't say that Cuba is the rare country that does not compete in the Felpudo's World Cup.

And they don't say that the revolution, raised under punishing conditions, became what it could be, and not what it wished it could be. Nor do they say that in great measure the wall between desire and reality was becoming higher and wider, thanks to the Imperial blockade that choked the development of a Cuban style democracy, forced the militarization of society and gave bureaucracy, that for every solution has a problem, the alibis it needed to justify and perpetuate itself.

And they don't say that in spite of all the trauma, in spite of all the aggression from the exterior, and the arbitrariness from within, this long suffering but stubbornly happy island has created the least unjust society in Latin America.

And his enemies don't say that this feat was the result of the sacrifices of her people, but also of the obstinate will and antiquated sense of honor of this gentleman, who always fought for the downtrodden, much like that famous colleague of his, from the fields of Castile.
