OSPAAAL celebrates the 50th anniversary of its Executive Secretariat and pay homage to President Mohamed Abdelaziz

With a political-cultural gala event, the Organization of Solidarity of the Peoples of Africa, Asia and Latin America (OSPAAAL) celebrated in Havana the fiftieth anniversary of the setting up of its first international Executive Secretariat.

The event, celebrated in the Hall of Mirrors of the Museum of the Revolution, was presided over by Lourdes Cervantes, OSPAAAL Secretary General, and representatives of the twelve countries from the three continents that make up the top leading body of that organization.

OSPAAAL was founded on the occasion of the First Tricontinental Conference, held in Havana in January 1966, with participation of more than 500 delegates of political parties, national liberation movements and revolutionary organizations from eighty-two nations of Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Opening the gala, Cervantes dedicated brief words of recognition and respect to comrade Mohamed Abdelaziz, President of the Democratic Saharawi Arab Republic and leader of the POLISARIO Front, who died on May 31 at the age of 68. For that reason, OSPAAAL decided that the flag of the Saharawi people should preside over the ceremony.

By honoring this outstanding Third World leader, we confirm the commitment of our organization to continue supporting the struggle of the Saharawi people in favor of their self-determination and independence until the final victory, she underlined, in the first public tribute paid to President Abdelaziz, only a few hours after the news of his passing away to immortality became known.

Abdelaziz participated in the founding of the POLISARIO Front in 1972. After the death of El-Ouali Mustapha Sayed, he took over in 1976 as General Secretary, and in 1982 he was elected president of the Democratic Saharawi Arab Republic, recognized by the African Union and by more than eighty countries from all the world.

The event was attended by numerous members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Cuba and members of revolutionary organizations representing twenty-one countries, as well as leaders of the Cuban political and mass organizations. The cultural program was performed by the Mariana de Gonitch Academy of Singing, directed by maestro Hugo Oslé.

Two videos by Santiago Rony Feliú in tribute to Ernesto Che Guevara and the great revolutionary Third World leaders who participated in the first Tricontinental Conference were exhibited as part of the program.

OSPAAAL’s international Executive Secretariat is presided over by Cuba and formed by four representatives of each one of the three continents: next to Cuba, Puerto Rico, Chile and El Salvador represent Latin America and the Caribbean; South Africa, Angola, Congo and Guinea represent Africa; and Vietnam, the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea, Syria and Palestine represent Asia and the Middle East.
