Organization of Tricontinental Solidarity Pays Tribute to Fidel Castro in Cuba

The Organization of Solidarity of the Peoples of Africa, Asia and Latin America (OSPAAAL) dedicated its Tricontinental Audiovisual Space here today to the ninetieth birthday of the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro.

Marking the birthday, to be celebrated August 13, the tricontinental organization highlighted in the ALBA House of Culture in the capital the work of the Cuban leader, particularly his relations to the countries of the so-called Third World.

In the presence of ambassadors, other diplomats, visitors and political representatives from thirty-seven countries, the occasion was also propitious to honor the Prensa Latina News Agency, considered one of Fidel Castro’s great achievements.

Last June, on the occasion of its fifty-seventh birthday, this medium inaugurated, also at the ALBA House, an exhibition made up by ninety photographs of the revolutionary leader. Those images are part of the video clip “El necio” (The Stubborn One), premiered this Thursday at the Tricontinental Audiovisual Space, with music by Cuban composer and singer Silvio Rodríguez, one of the artists who disseminated the epics of the Revolution in the Antillean nation through his songs.

Rodríguez and Pablo Milanés, another great figure of the New Cuban Trova (ballads), are the authors of the theme “When I Found You”, also screened as video clip with ninety photographs of Fidel next to Third World personalities. Former presidents such as South African Nelson Mandela, Palestinian Yasser Arafat, and Venezuelan Hugo Chávez, or in office like Daniel Ortega, from Nicaragua, and Evo Morales, from Bolivia; and activists such as U.S. Americans Malcolm X and Reverend Lucius Walker are included in that selection of photographs.

During the event, Enrique Ubieta, director of the magazine Cuba Socialista, made a special presentation of the first issue of the fourth period of that publication, which had only been presented to the delegates to the Seventh Party Congress up to this day. It was another gift for Fidel, considered by OSPAAAL as the most socialist of all Cuban revolutionaries.

The representatives of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola, the Democratic Party of Guinea, the National Hostos Independence Movement of Puerto Rico and the Communist Party of Chile at OSPAAAL’s Executive Secretariat handed to its General Secretary, Lourdes Cervantes, congratulation messages for the Cuban leader.

OSPAAAL, an organization that celebrated its fiftieth anniversary this year, also advanced some projects of its official organ, the magazine Tricontinental, for next year. Among them is an e-book on the presence of Fidel Castro in the pages of that publication since its first issue in April of 1967.
